Speaker Anġlu Farrugia received a farewell visit from the Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt Magda Baraka, whose tenure of office is coming to an end.
Speaker Farrugia expressed his appreciation to Ambassador Baraka for her hard work in enhancing the very close and friendly relations that exist between Malta and Egypt, which relations were established fifty-two years ago. He recalled the contacts that exisisted between Dom Mintoff and Gamal Abdel Nasser in the late 1950s.
The two sides discussed various topics of mutual interest, including economic and business ties between the two countries. They also referred to parliamentary cooperation in regional and international fora.
The Maltese diaspora which lived in Egypt, particularly in Alexandria, in the early twentieth century, was also mentioned.
The political situation in Egypt and the threat of terrorism also featured in the talks between the two dignitaries.
