The Vice Marshall of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland (Deputy Speaker of Parliament) Mr Eugeniusz Grzeszczak met the Parliamentary Delegation led by Speaker Anglu Farrugia on an official visit to Warsaw earlier this evening.
In his introductory words of welcome, the Polish Deputy Speaker spoke about the need of stronger interparliamentary relations between the two parliaments. Dr Anġlu Farrugia replied that he agreed wholeheartedly with his host on this premise, and made reference to the fact that, since his election to the presidency of the House of Representatives of Malta, he has been actively pursuing his idea of setting up Joint Parliamentary Friendship Groups with as many parliaments as possible, including one with the Polish Sejm. "In fact," Dr Farrugia stressed, "this is a crucial and very important aspect of parliamentary diplomacy, because national parliaments are themselves the representative voice of the people. Through the establishment of these Friendship Groups, parliamentarians from different countries can discuss matters which are of both national and regional interest."
The Speaker also recalled that the invitation issued earlier this year for the Marshall of the Sejm, Ms Ewa Kopacz, to visit Malta would be instrumental in the intensification of the dialogue between the two parliaments. The fact that the parliamentary delegation from Malta included representatives from both sides of the House, that is the Honourable Chris Agius from the Government side, along with Honourable Claudette Buttigieg from the Opposition, conveyed a clear message that consensus existed in the Maltese Parliament for these relations with Poland to be enhanced.
