PRPR171488 - The Speaker receives a courtesy visit by the Ambassdor of the Republic of Colombia – 22.06.17

​Speaker Anġlu Farrugia received a courtesy visit from the Ambassador of the Republic of Colombia Juan Mesa Zuleta.
 
Whilst expressing his condolences to the families of the victims of last Saturday’s Bogota shopping mall bombing, the Speaker recalled the cordial bilateral relations between Malta and Colombia following the establishment of diplomatic relations on 31 March, 1986. He also mentioned past visits to Colombia by Maltese dignitaries including late President Agatha Barbara’s state visit in September 1986.
 
The two dignitaries discussed the situation in Colombia and issues of mutual interest, with particular reference to the enhancement of trade and commercial relations between the two countries. The Speaker and the Ambassador also mentioned the idea of forming a parliamentary friendship group.
 
The EU-Colombia relations as well as the III EU-CELAC Summit which will be held in El Salvador in October 2017 were also discussed.
 
Ambassador Zuleta was accompanied by First Secretary – Embassy of the Republic of Colombia in Rome Maria Camila Sierra and Honorary Consul of Colombia in Malta Dr Joseph Buhagiar.
