Speaker Anġlu Farrugia inaugurated an exhibition marking the 45th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the People’s Republic of China and the Republic of Malta (1972-2017). The exhibit consists of a photographic exhibition depicting some of the important highlights of China-Malta relations, and a fine arts exhibition presented by Maltese artists, entitled Inspired in China.
In his speech, the Speaker described the decision to establish diplomatic relations between China and Malta in 1972 as an important political act that brought together in friendship a small European nation in the central Mediterranean and a large nation in Asia. This reflects Malta’s Euro-Mediterranean dimension, being a European nation and a member of the European Union, a Mediterranean nation whose vision goes beyond the geographical space of the Mediterranean basin, interacting with friendly countries, such as China.
Though distant from one another, both governments managed to identify common interests to serve as good foundations for close friendly ties between China and Malta. They have also benefitted from reciprocal good deeds and close collaboration. As for the Maltese, they have learnt that China is indeed a reliable partner, and a correct and respectful friend. Over the years, Malta has been an important interlocutor for China with other friendly countries.
The Speaker expressed his confidence that the existing strong friendly ties can be further enhanced through innovative forms of economic activities that would further contribute to the well-being of the people of China and Malta.
The Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China Jiang Jiang paid tribute to the leaders of the older generation of both countries for their historic contribution to China-Malta ties. He also praised all the friends who have worked hard to promote the China-Malta relationship throughout the years. He expressed his optimism that the two governments would further consolidate bilateral cooperation and open up even broader prospects for the China-Malta friendship.
The general public is invited to view the exhibition at the foyer of the House of Representatives, Parliament of Malta, Valletta, up to Wednesday, 24 May 2017. Opening hours are as follows: during weekdays, from 09.00 to 17.00; Saturdays and Sundays, from 09.00 to 12.30.
